The Unified Modeling Language (UML) has been positioned by James Rumbaugh and others as the legitimate successor of the Object Modeling Technique (OMT).
Previous releases of the UML suite supported OMT and future releases of the UML suite will support UML only. To support our customers during the transition from OMT to UML, this release of the UML suite supports both. For users wishing to move their existing diagrams to the UML notation, a utility is provided that will provide partial conversion of OMT diagrams.
The UML suite module OMT provides the menu items and Tcl code required to create and use diagrams supported by the OMT methodology. This module must be active if you want to work with the UML suite according to this methodology.
You can check whether a module is active on a particular Browser level by selecting Utilities | Show Active Modules on that level.
See the Activating Modules help page for details on how to activate a module.
By activating the OMT module you add the following diagrams to the UML suite:
The UML diagrams remain available, but most are not used in OMT.
| Diagram | Explanation |
|---|---|
| Activity Diagram (AD) | UML only. |
| Class Communication Diagram (CCD) | OMT only. |
| Class Diagram (CD) | UML and OMT. In OMT, a class diagram is called a Class Association Diagram. |
| Collaboration Diagram (COD) | UML only. |
| Component Diagram (CPD) | UML only. |
| Data Flow Diagram (DFD) | OMT only. |
| Deployment Diagram (DPD) | UML only. |
| Message Generalization Diagram (MGD) | OMT only. |
| Sequence Diagram (SD) | UML and OMT. In OMT, a sequence diagram is called an Event Trace Diagram. |
| Statechart Diagram (STD) | UML and OMT. In OMT, a statechart diagram is called a State Transition diagram. |
| Use Case Diagram (UCD) | UML and OMT. |
This chapter describes only the diagrams used in OMT. For information about the UML diagrams, see Chapter 4, Exploring Each Diagram.
The UML suite allows you to choose between the UML or the OMT notation in the following diagram editors:
| Diagram | OMT Equivalent |
|---|---|
| Class Diagram (CD) | Class Association Diagram |
| Sequence Diagram (SD) | Event Trace Diagram |
| Statechart Diagram (STD) | State Transition Diagrams |
You can switch from UML look to OMT look, or vice versa, using the commands Options | OMT Look and Options | UML Look in the diagram editors. The OMT module does not need to be active to switch looks.
If you choose to use OMT, you risk losing information when you upgrade to a future release of the UML suite. In particular, the Class Communication, Data Flow, and Message Generalization diagrams are not supported for UML. Information specified in these diagrams will be lost during a future the UML suite upgrade unless you choose to run the convert utility.
