Navigating Between Diagrams

Relationships among diagrams

In the UML suite, the components in one diagram are often related to the components in another; for example, an actor in a UCD is a class in a CD. This relationship has two consequences for your work in the UML suite:

How to navigate between diagrams

ÿ To navigate between diagrams:

  1. Select a component in the current diagram and then select File | Open, or double-click the selected component.

Note: The component must have a name and you must have saved your diagram. If not, the option File | Open is unavailable.

If the selected component refers to more than one item, the Items dialog box appears.
  2. Click the item that you want to navigate from, and then click OK. The options listed depend on what item you selected and what diagrams exist.

Navigation options

This table shows the navigation options.

option Operation
Make decomposition Create a diagram of the same type; the current diagram is closed.
Load diagram Open a diagram of the same type; the current diagram is closed.
Create diagram Create a diagram of a different type.
Start editor Open a diagram of a different type.

Navigation paths

This table shows the default navigation paths provided for each diagram object. You can customize these paths, as described in Customizing Navigation in The UML Suite Customization Guide.

Diagram Selected Object Selected Item Navigation Paths TO
AD Object in State Object
  • CD that is named, or contains a class that is named, object_name
  • AD or SD qualified by object_name
  • STD named object_name:top
  • Signal Receipt AD or STD named event_name, qualified by the class that qualifies the original AD
Transition AD or STD named event_name, qualified by the qualifier of the original AD

  • UCD that is named, or contains an actor that is named, actor_name
  • Initiator SD that contains an object or active object whose type matches the name of the initiator
    Use Case
  • AD, COD, or SD qualified by use_case_name
  • UCD named use_case_name
  • Generated diagram names

When navigation creates a diagram, the UML suite generates the diagram name based on the name of the component from which you are navigating.

Note: Navigation does not create CPDs, DPDs, or PDs.

The generated diagram remains linked to the component from which it was created. If you change the name of the component in the original diagram, the UML suite changes the name of the generated diagram (or package).

    Packages you can navigate to

The Package column in the Select Operation dialog box displays the name of the package in which the create or open action will take place.

If the item you are navigating from is already defined in that package, an asterisk is placed in front of the package name.

When selecting an open or create operation, you can determine in which package the operation will be carried out by checking the value of the package field:

    Asterisk package Situation
yes current package_name The item is defined in the current package. The operation will be carried out in this package.
yes other package_name The item is defined in another package. The operation will be carried out in the other package.
no current package_name Either of the following:
  • The item is not defined anywhere. For example, you have created a class without a CDM or properties.
  • The class is defined in another package and referenced in this package. In both cases, the operation will be carried out in this package.
  • no other package_name The item is defined in the current package but is referenced in another package. The operation will be carried out in the other package.
